Voltaire and “Islamic Tolerance”: Apologetic Cut-and-Paste
A famous statement by Voltaire that the Arabs were “the most clement of all conquerors” is used as proof of Islamic tolerance in Spain. Its context, the later phases examined by Voltaire and modern historiography instead show conquest, tribute, political pragmatism and the subordination of non-Muslims.
